Plastic packaging has increasingly become part of modern life. It can be used to package anything and everything from food and drink items to personal care products. The growing recognition of the significant risks it poses not only to the environment but also to human health is increasingly evident.
Pollution
There are several dangers of using plastic packaging. Firstly, the pollution that it causes to the environment. Often plastic packaging is discarded improperly and ends up in rivers, oceans and landfill and takes years to decompose. Also contrary to widespread belief not all plastic packaging is recyclable, or it is not recycled properly.
Environmental Damage
As well as this the plastic packaging that ends up in rivers and oceans can often cause harm to the wildlife that live in these habitats. Wildlife can often mistake the packaging for food which can lead to suffocation, injury, and even in some cases death. It can also cause disruption to the soil and water ecosystems surrounding the wildlife’s habitat. The affect on us can be a negative impact on agricultural productivity from the environmental damage that plastic packaging can cause.
Economic Impact
Plastic packaging also has large hidden costs on the economy. For example, the taxpayer pays for waste management and environmental cleaning, and of course within this cost is included the cost to dispose of plastic packaging.
Chemical Leaching
The most serious affect that plastic packaging can have on us is that the chemicals used in packaging can break down and cause chemical leaching. Chemical leaching is the process where chemicals or substances in a material e.g., packaging are released and dissolved into another substance for example food or drink. This can lead to several health risks for humans such as development disorders and in some cases even cancer.
